For scholarly reflection, Čiurlionis emerges as an exceptionally intriguing figure, not only due to his achievements situated at the intersection of multiple arts, but also because of his position within the cartography of modernism—a phenomenon that engaged artists across Europe while simultaneously acquiring distinctive forms within its various regions and nations. Among the diverse attempts to define and delimit this current, we adopt the perspective that links cultural phenomena to the experience of modernization processes,
which in the first decades of the twentieth century generated a pervasive sense of an impending major rupture in the history of modern Europe.
